Get Club auto-theft device at half price from WSU police

Learn how you can get a theft-deterrent device for automobiles at a reduced price through a deal made possible by the Wayne State Police Department.

A popular theft deterrent device is The Club Steering Wheel Lock. It prevents the steering wheel from being turned more than a few degrees. The Club is a visible lock that the thief will see as he approaches your car. Once he sees it, the average thief will realize that stealing your car will require much more time and effort. He will usually move on to a different car.

The Club Steering Wheel lock, depending on the model, generally retails at prices from $20 to $40 and might not be within the budget of many students.

The Wayne State Police Department (WSUPD) recently contacted Winner International, LLC, the manufacturer of The Club, in an attempt to find a source for reduced pricing.

The company has agreed to provide its new Club Twin Hooks model #3010 Steering Wheel Lock to WSUPD for $11 each--that's about 50 percent less than the best retail price WSUPD could find--if WSUPD would purchase them, in volume, directly from the manufacturer.

The Twin Hooks model #3010 fits most makes of cars, trucks and SUVs and is self-locking, requiring a key only to unlock the unit when removing it.

The Club Twin Hooks steering wheel lock is available to WSU students, staff and faculty for an $11 donation per unit. WSUPD will make no profit on these transactions. The Club Steering Wheel Lock Program will be ongoing and self-funding, with the donated proceeds being used to purchase more Clubs to be made available to more of our community members at our same reduced cost.

The Club Twin Hooks can be obtained at the Wayne State University Police Department, located at 76 W. Hancock, between Cass and Woodward, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis.

This offer is limited to students, staff and faculty, and you must bring your OneCard. The $11 donation can be in the form of cash or check (payable to Wayne State University Police).

There is a limit of two Club Twin Hooks per person.

While very few anti-theft devices can guarantee your car will not be stolen (a protected vehicle can still be towed), a steering wheel lock device such as The Club will add an extra measure of protection by making a thief work harder and take longer to steal your vehicle.

Take advantage of the program, or use another anti-theft device each time you park your car--anywhere. About 15 percent of the vehicles stolen in Michigan, each year, had or were equipped with an anti-theft device that was not in use at the time the vehicle was stolen.

For more information on The Club steering wheel lock device, contact the WSUPD Crime Prevention Section at 577-6064.
