April 30
On the heels of two successful Wayne Cares events, an additional volunteer opportunity is planned for Saturday, May 16. Formerly known as the Motor City Makeover, Midtown Detroit's Spring Clean-Up is a partnership of the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) and Wayne State University.

April 28
The Spotlight on African American Graduates Ceremony is aimed at illuminating positive African-American role models at Wayne State. It will be held Saturday, May 2, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at McGregor Conference Center followed by a ceremony in the Community Arts Auditorium.

Mark VanBerkum, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), received the highly prestigious President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The Center for Urban Studies is administering a survey in an effort to gather information to facilitate improvements in the accessibility, responsiveness and safety of the WSU parking and shuttle bus systems.

A standing ovation followed the Earth Week presentation by award-winning scientist, conservationist and documentarian David Suzuki. Every Community Arts Auditorium seat was filled and hundreds of viewers streamed the lecture online.

Five people who have distinguished themselves in widely diverse career fields will receive honorary doctoral degrees from Wayne State University at annual commencement ceremonies, May 7 - 8, at Tom Adams Field and during the May 18 Law School commencement at the Detroit Opera House.

Only a few days remain to give your input on campus smoking. The Academic Senate is conducting a survey to determine whether Wayne State's smoking policies should be revised. All members of the university community are requested to complete the survey by Monday, April 27.

Constructed with an energy-efficient and resource-friendly design, the Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center advances Wayne State’s sustainable building initiatives. The ribbon cutting is at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, and the program begins in the auditorium at 1:15 p.m.

Ray David Henson, a former Wayne Law faculty member, died March 7 in St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco.

Wayne State University Law School received a generous $155,000 gift from Bodman LLP at the 12th annual Treasure of Detroit Gala held at the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit on March 28.  Bodman served as the event’s presenting sponsor.

Wayne State’s Green Team, a division of Facilities Planning and Management, is expanding its blue-bag recycling program by piloting a new source-separation program.

Wayne State faculty will participate in The 21st Century Voter: Promoting Michigan Voter Power, an election reform conference about simplifying the voting process and reducing the influence of money in elections.

In an effort to advise younger generations on environmentalism opportunities, David Suzuki, an award-winning scientist and broadcaster, will discuss Saving our Planet: The Challenge of the 21st Century. The lecture is a special Earth Week presentation of the Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society (FOCIS).

Wayne State University and the Nederlander Company present the seventh annual Apple Award, Thursday, April 16, at 6 p.m. in the Fisher Theatre. 

April 3
Howard J. Normile, PhD, interim dean for the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS), and faculty members David Bach, PharmD, and Linda A. Jaber, PharmD, were honored at the Arab American Pharmacist Association (AAPA) annual awards and scholarship dinner, March 27.

April 2
The American Red Cross in coordination with the University Activities Committee (UAC) will hold the Spring Blood Drive on campus April 13 - 17.
